Hollywood’s Biggest Night often introduces new stars and most certainly novel movies titles- some we may not recognize and others we can’t help but fall in love with- but this year, The 2013 Oscars, also introduced us to youngest person to ever receive a Best Actress Oscar nomination– her name- Quvenzhané Wallis.
“In a million years, when kids go to school, they gonna know: Once there was a Hushpuppy, and she lived with her daddy in the Bathtub,” Quvenzhane Wallis says at the beginning of Beasts at the Southern Wild.
At only 9 years of age, Wallis makes history as the youngest Best Actress Oscar nominee ever! To make it even more exciting, she secured the nomination for her very first feature film role, in Behn Zeitlin’s “Beasts of the Southern Wild.” When she auditioned for her role in the film, she was only 5, and yes like most actors in Hollywood, Wallis [had to tell a little white lie] in order to work her way into the process because the minimum age was supposed to be 6. After Wallis’ exceptional audition, Zeitlin altered the lead role of Hushpuppy to highlight Wallis’ strengths as a young actress — not too shabby, considering her age and inexperience.
The rising star was up against an accomplished list of actresses on Sunday night, among them Jessica Chastain in “Zero Dark Thirty,” Jennifer Lawrence in “Silver Linings Playbook” and Naomi Watts in “The Impossible.” Interestingly and odd enough, in a cool twists of fate, Wallis was also up against Emmanuelle Riva, the oldest actress ever nominated for Best Actress for her gut-wrenching turn in “Amour,” who turned 86 on Oscar night.
And while little Wallis didn’t score the gold at the Oscars, she did score gold elsewhere, Sunday’s casting announcement should be reassuring, with official word coming down that she will play the title role in a remake of “Annie.” The remake will be directed by “Easy A” helmer Will Gluck and produced by non-other than Jay-Z and Will Smith. Early casting speculation had the role being taken over by Smith’s daughter, Willow, who reportedly was more interested in being an edgy-stylish 12-year-old girl. Well, we all know both young stars are very talented, but there’s only space for one “Annie” in the remake, and we are excited to see Wallis continue to shine bright! Not to mention, the young Oscar’s nominee sure knows how to stand out and make a name for herself- she’s been toting around a different furry accessory at every red carpet this award season with her signature purses…Just an overall bundle of Joy!
