Music’s biggest night may have meant toned down wardrobes for attendees but the nationally televised event made up for the lack of excess skin with several surprises.
Justin Timberlake returned to the big stage following a six year hiatus. The “Sexyback” crooner performed ‘Suit & Tie’– his duet with rapper Jay-Z— for one of the first public performances of the song which is steadily climbing the Billboard charts. Timberlake also debuted “Pusher Love Girl’ another new song from his upcoming album, “The 20/20 Experience”, set to hit stores March 19th.
Taylor Swift opened the show with a red and white circus-themed performance of her hit “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” At one point Swift used a British accent to talk about how an ex-lover was un-wantedly proclaiming his love for the 23-year old singer. The move was a not-so-subtle dis about Swift’s ex Harry Styles, a member of the boy band “One Direction’ who Swift broke up with a few months ago.
Rapper turned actor LL Cool J returned for a second consecutive year to host the Grammy Awards which was telecast from the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.
“Sorry, I got stuck to Melissa Lambert, now that’s a story and a song”, said singer Kelly Clarkson as she accepted her Grammy for ‘Best Pop Vocal Album’ for the song ‘Stronger.’ “Miguel, I don’t know who the hell you are but we need to sing together”, added Clarkson. The former American Idol winner was referring to a sensual performance of Miguel and rapper Wiz Khalifa for the song ‘Adorn.’
Rihanna who won her 7th career Grammy of the night, also hit the stage to perform her new single ‘Stay’ featuring singer-songwriter-producer Mikky Ekko.
Jennifer Lopez and Pitbull were paired as presenters and so were Ellen DeGeneres and Beyonce, fresh off her rousing SuperBowl halftime show.
Newcomer Frank Ocean took home two GRAMMY’S, including one for ‘No Church In The Wild’, a collaboration with Jay-Z, Kanye West & The Dream. Frank & The Dream did the honors of the acceptance speech while Jay looked on in agreement, only chiming in “I would like to thank the Swap Meet for his hat.” The words from Jay were in reference to The Dream’s odd looking skullcap.
